Honorees were announced for the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s (NHMC) 24th annual Impact Awards, which take place virtually on December 5, 2021. NHMC is a non-profit organization that “builds bridges, creates opportunities, resources, and connects Latinx talent with the entertainment industry.”

Some of the award recipients this year include Salma Hayek (Outstanding Achievement in Film); Rosie Pérez (Outstanding Performance in a Series); Matthew López (Outstanding Playwright); Monica Lozano (Outstanding Leadership); and Tessa Thompson (Outstanding Performance in a Film).

“It is such an honor to celebrate Latinx talent that has paved the way for a more inclusive entertainment industry, one that reflects the diversity not only within the Latinx community, but also the diversity of the Latinx experience,” Brenda Victoria Castillo, president, and CEO of NHMC said in a statement. “The evening’s honorees have exemplified leadership in the fight for representation and inclusivity throughout their careers and continue to open doors for others through their work.”

This year, Oscar-nominated actress Hayek starred in four films – Bliss, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, Eternals, and House of Gucci, which premieres on November 24, 2021. Thompson made an impression with her performance in her lone film this year, the drama Passing. In the film, she plays one of two Black women who reunite years after graduating from high school. They realize how different their lives are because one of them can “pass” as white.

Pérez is being recognized for her work on the HBO Max original series The Flight Attendant, while López is receiving the award for becoming the first-ever Latine playwright to win a Tony Award. As a leader in the education sector, Lozano is receiving the Impact Award for her role as the president of the San Francisco-based College Futures Foundation.

This year’s NHMC gala will take place virtually across all NHMC platforms. Visit the NHMC Gala Eventbrite page to register for the free event.
