The classic Selena movie on the late Tex-Mex queen is serving as a vehicle to launch Cinemauto Drive-In Series in L.A. this weekend (Sept. 18 – Sept. 19). Jennifer Lopez’s 1997 breakout role will lead a slate of independent films by Latinx filmmakers.

This weekend, in Chinatown, will see the launch of Cinemauto: A Celebration of Hispanic Filmmakers with a curated selection of film and video by the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF). In this time of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, drive-ins are now becoming the new (old) social distancing spots to watch movies.

“Cinemauto brings you thoughtful, immersive drive-in screening experiences marrying community, art, culture, food, and entertainment while promoting local businesses and fostering inclusive programming that celebrates diverse voices and a new generation of filmmakers,” reads a statement.

Other movies being shown this weekend as part of the Cinemauto Drive-In Series include the director’s cut of Mexican-American singer Cuco‘s “Hydroclone” music video by Jazmine Garcia and Baby, a short film by Thais Drassinower. The animated movie Miguel by Armando Sepulveda and Muy Gay Too Mexicano by Lorena Lourenco are also part of the line-up.

Proceeds from the Cinemauto Drive-In Series will benefit Homeboy Industries and LALIFF. You can purchase tickets to the event here.
