Update: The whole documentary is currently available on Netflix’s YouTube channel Behind the Streams here.
Everyone wants to know more about Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), and Netflix is set to deliver. The movie, which recently entered the Top 10 most-watched non-English language movies of all time on the streamer is set to get a behind-the-scenes documentary. Its release date is set for January 24, 2024 according to What’s on Netflix.
Titled Society of the Snow: Who Were We on the Mountain? or La Sociedad de la Nieve: ¿Quiénes Fuimos en la Montaña?, the documentary will give viewers “an in-depth look at the creative process behind “Society of the Snow,” featuring cast, crew, director J.A. Bayona and even real-life survivors.”
Society of the Snow is based on the book by Pablo Vierci and tells the real story of the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes in 1972. The movie, which has garnered multiple nominations for Best Foreign Language Film in the recent awards season and is on the short-list in that category for the Oscars, focuses not just on the 16 survivors from the crash, but on the 45 passengers who were on the plane.
Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado climbed 15,260 feet and walked for approximately 38 miles and 10 days to seek help, leading to 16 survivors being rescued after 72 days in the mountains.
The documentary is set to be 36 minutes long and joins a short and exclusive list of other Netflix movies and series to get a behind-the-scenes documentary, among them All Quiet on the Western Front, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Our Planet, The Queen’s Gambit, The Power of the Dog, The Witcher, and Unorthodox.
