When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made its way to theaters at the end of 2018, viewers were loving the vibrant animation, the fact that the main character – Afro-Latino Spider-Man Miles Morales – spoke to his mom in Spanish and Miles’s overprotective dad. The animated Oscar-winning film went on to gross more than $190 million domestically and was quickly greenlit for a sequel. While we don’t know much about the upcoming movie (except that it’ll follow Miles’s relationship with Gwen Stacy), we at least know how long we’ll have to wait for the follow-up.
On Friday, Sony announced the sequel will arrive in theaters on April 8, 2022, which will probably be here before you know it. Or at least gives you plenty of time to watch and rewatch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Most of the first film centers around Miles (voiced by Shameik Moore) adjusting to life as Spider-Man after being bit by a radioactive spider and after a supervillain brings together Spider-people from multiple universes. In the end, we learn that Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) has found a way to communicate with Miles despite living in a different dimension. So their storyline seems like a logical place to pick up for a second entry into this world.
This was the first feature film revolving around Miles, who was created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. While not as well-known as Peter Parker, Morales is an example of the ways that the comic book world is slowly embracing diverse characters, so it’s wonderful knowing that his story will continue on the big screen and provide us an even closer look into his life.
