“We have a spark that’ll light the fire that’ll burn the First Order down.” These dramatic words represent the only line Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron utters during the new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It’s an otherwise Rey/Luke/Kylo-dominated preview, but at least LucasFilm knew to give the people what they want by throwing some brooding footage of Poe. The dark and foreboding trailer hints that, like The Empire Strikes Back, this could be the darkest movie of the trilogy.
However, Dameron’s words do offer a cause for optimism. While we don’t get much more than five seconds of screen time of Isaac, we do see him in three different settings and that’s enough to get us to start speculating wildly.
First, we see him anxiously looking out the window of a ship at an ongoing space battle. This is possibly the First Order attack Kylo Ren leads against the Resistance, which we get a peek at earlier in the trailer.
Then, we see him doing what he does best, flying his X-wing into danger. We know General Leia considers him one of The Resistance’s top pilots, and he’ll surely play a role in the battles to come.
Finally, we see him delivering the aforementioned line, though we don’t know who is on the other end of his speech. He could be giving a pep talk to his buddy Finn, who we subsequently see in a duel with Captain Phasma, or trying to rally his fellow Resistance pilots.
The trailer premiered during halftime of the Monday Night Football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears. For some reason that meant stormtroopers appeared both on the field and awkwardly standing next to Sean McDonough in the broadcast booth.
Unfortunately, the powers that be are still holding out on that Benicio Del Toro goodness. Fortunately, they gave us our first look at the adorable porg that already won the internet’s heart.
The second installment of the new Star Wars trilogy premieres in December. Until then, watch the trailer below:
