Three strangers who share an obsession with true-crime stories are caught up in their own murder mystery for the upcoming Hulu series Only Murders in the Building. The show stars Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers) and comedy icons Steve Martin (Father of the Bride) and Martin Short (Innerspace). The trio is also executive producing the series.
The first teaser trailer for the 10-episode series begins with Martin’s character Charles narrating his thoughts about what makes a great true-crime story. “A great murder mystery un-peels itself like an onion,” he says.
“The secrets are the fun part,” Gomez’s character Mabel Mora adds. Short’s character Oliver says that “sometimes it’s easier to figure out someone else’s secret than it is to deal with your own.”
When Oliver gets home to his apartment one day, a note is posted on his door that reads: “End the podcast or I end you.”
Later, Oliver and Charles show up at Mabel’s door and ask her if she wants to investigate the death of someone in their building.
“We’re gonna go down there and look around for clues,” Charles says as he hands her a plastic, yellow glove. “Do you wanna come?” Mabel seems up for the adventure.
“Do I want to break into a dead guy’s apartment and go through all his shit?” Mabel asks. “Sounds like an afternoon.”
Only Murders in the Building marks Martin’s first starring role on a non-variety TV series. The show also stars Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Aaron Dominguez (Words on Bathroom Walls) and Nathan Lane (The Birdcage).
Only Murders in the Building premieres on Hulu August 31.
