The death of Mexican American undercover U.S. DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena is one of the most significant events in U.S.-Mexico history, and it’s also one that’s remained a mystery. While the storyline is at the basis of the first season of Narcos: Mexico, the full story behind Camarena’s mission and unfortunate death remains untold. The Amazon Original docuseries, The Last Narc, follows the events up to Camarena’s torturous death that were fictionalized on that Netflix show, where Camarena was portrayed by Michael Peña.

“He was good at what he did, and he inflicted tremendous pain on the cartel and they were not gonna take that sitting down, and they didn’t,” says one of the interviewees in the doc’s official trailer. The docuseries features never-before-seen interviews with key people in Camarena’s former life and work. That includes his wife Geneva “Mika” Camarena and Hector Berrellez, lead DEA investigator whose “mission was to find out everything that happened to Kiki from the time he was picked up to the time he died” as well as those who have remained silent until now due to fear of also being killed.

“He was about to uncover that U.S. intelligence officials was protecting drug lords,” shares Berrellez. “The Camarena case is being covered up to this day. I’m fearful that my own government is going to kill me.”

Here’s the trailer for the series.
