The USA network is ready to get back into the world of action and female badasses with the third season premiere of their popular drama series Queen of the South. With a new female showrunner behind the wheel, and more Latinas on television now than ever before, the time is ripe to welcome back Alice Braga‘s take-no-prisoners heroine, Teresa Mendoza. USA recently dropped a trailer for season three that seems to show off Teresa’s new attempts to unseat the current drug queen and take over for herself.
The brief teaser doesn’t give any indications of plot, short of Braga’s Teresa being on the run from current drug queen Carmen Vargas (Veronica Falcon), and possibly having to decide between a good-looking man and her commitment to her growing empire. “You will have to choose between survival and your heart” seems to always be the motto of the series, but it’s even more pronounced here. In fact, the trailer seems very heavy on impressive sounding one-liners, punctuating scenes with the phrase “heavy is the head that wears the crown.” The announcement on the show’s official Facebook page announcing the season three premiere goes one step further, saying “Being Queen will require more work – and more sacrifice – than Teresa ever imagined.” We also get the requisite guns and dead body shots that you often come to expect from series like these.
Based on the novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte and a remake of the hit series La reina del sur starring Kate del Castillo, Queen of the South has exceeded expectations repeatedly, especially in its second season under the eye of Mexican-Irish showrunner Natalie Chaidez. Those who are already fans of the series will eat up season three when it premieres on the USA network.
Queen of the South premieres June 21 on the USA Network.
