The legacy of late ranchera singer Vicente Fernández will always live on in his music. But now, fans will also get to see the life and career of “El Charro de Huentitán” dramatized in an upcoming Netflix series.

The series will be called The Idol of the People and produced by Caracol TV and air on its Colombian television network. According to Deadline, Netflix will stream the series outside of Colombia. Actor Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin) will portray Fernández.

Before Fernández’s death on Sunday (December 12), Camil was already on social media sharing with fans how excited he was to play the legendary singer.

“Portraying Vicente Fernández, without a doubt, is one of the biggest and most important challenges of my career,” he wrote on Instagram in September. “In my opinion, Chente is Mexico’s biggest idol and the most monumental exponent of Mexican music all over the world.”

Camil even shared a photo of himself as Fernández alongside a picture of the real Fernández at a young age to show the uncanny resemblance.

After Fernández’s death this week, Camil shared his sentiments about what Fernández meant to the world of music.

“Today, the world cries to the great Vicente Fernández, but it also celebrates him, sings him, remembers him, falls in love with him, and thanks him for…his unforgettable songs in the most important moments of their lives,” Camil wrote.

He also shared his thoughts about the Netflix series and how it has helped him understand the person Fernández was.

“Thanks to the project I’m working on, I’ve been able to learn the history, infancy, journey, legacy, and all the adversities he faced,” he wrote. “My Chente, to get to be the person you were has taught me to respect you, to love you, and to honor you even more. No one can deny Vicente is a monument and a treasure for Mexico and Ranchera music on a global scale.”
