Tanya Saracho, the creator and showrunner of the Starz series Vida, is returning to the streaming platform with a new, half-hour dramatic series, Lovesong.

Lovesong tells the story of two Mexican-American friends living in London, who fall in love with the same musician. English musician and actor Johnny Flynn (Emma) will serve as the composer of the series. Saracho said the idea for the series came to her when she was introduced to Flynn’s music in London during the pandemic.

“This story is very much a child of the pandemic, born from those times when we were yearning for love stories to soothe the soul and light the way through the dark times,” Saracho said in a statement. “This is also when the light of Johnny Flynn’s music found me and lit the way into the story.”

While spending five months in London, Saracho said that Flynn was “generous enough to lead [her] through his lived experience of the East London music scene.” This experience is now part of the Lovesong story. “It’s wonderful to be coming home to Starz to conceive of my new story of love, a place that truly nurtured and supported me while I crafted the love story of the two Hernandez sisters in Vida,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier to return to bring this new narrative to life.”

On social media, Saracho added: “This story has taken up all my heart space for the past two years. It feels so unbelievably good to be able to share this.”

On Thursday (May 19), Saracho will participate in the inaugural #TakeTheLead summit from Starz by sitting on the panel “Power of Allyship” to talk about the importance of representation in Hollywood.

“We are beyond thrilled to partner with Tanya to bring her bold and tantalizing love story to life,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for Starz. “Throughout her career and from Vida to Lovesong on Starz, her dedication to Latine representation embodies the spirit of #TakeTheLead.”
