Fans of Blue Beetle finally have a chance to see the superhero in action after DC released the official trailer online for their first Latino-led superhero movie. This comes after a special premiere with lead actor Xolo Maridueña.

“I have the jitters,” Maridueña told members of the media inside a Los Angeles movie theater this weekend after a screening of the first trailer for his upcoming superhero movie Blue Beetle. “Every time I see the trailer, I get so excited. To be able to finally show it to all of you, it’s a pleasure. It looks sick!”

Maridueña (Cobra Kai) was in attendance alongside Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) to talk about making the movie. After seeing the trailer privately so many times, Soto said he was glad that the experience hasn’t gotten old for him. “Watching it with you guys, it felt different,” he said. “It felt like the first time I saw it.”

Now, fans everywhere get to see the Blue Beetle trailer.

According to the DC Comics film’s official synopsis, “recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Maridueña) returns home full of aspirations for his future.” He soon stumbles upon “an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab … which chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host.” In doing so, Jaime is “bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers.”

Maridueña pointed out that unlike other superhero movies where the main character is able to hide his identity from everyone, Jaime’s Latine family is right there with him during his first transformation into the title character.

In the trailer, the Scarab attaches itself to Jaime in the middle of his mother’s kitchen with his entire family watching. “Mijo?” his mother asks once Jaime becomes unrecognizable in his full Blue Beetle suit. Later, Blue Beetle accidentally slices a city bus in half and tells his family about it.

“To come through this journey together is something we have never seen before in superhero movies,” Maridueña said. “That really is the beating heart of [Blue Beetle]. It can’t happen without the family.”

Blue Beetle premieres nationwide at theaters on August 18, 2023.
