Coming off one of his career highs with the Oscar-winning family dramedy CODA, Eugenio Derbez is now starring in The Valet, a comedy of errors featuring the Mexican actor playing a parking valet caught up in a Hollywood scandal.
In the first trailer for the film, audiences meet Antonio (Derbez), who is only doing his job parking people’s cars when he accidentally shows up in a paparazzi’s photograph that captures a famous actress named Olivia Allan (Samara Weaving) having an affair with a married billionaire (Max Greenfield).
To keep the affair secret, Olivia and her team devise a plan to invent a fake relationship between Antonio and Olivia, so people will think they are the legit couple in the photo. The setup is a romantic comedy trope, but one that could hit differently if Derbez is given a unique script. Like CODA, The Valet is also a remake of a French film.
The trailer shows Derbez meeting Olivia for the first time when he accidentally slams his bicycle into a car parked right beside her and her married fling. With Olivia’s new film opening in less than a week, she is facing a PR nightmare, so enlists the help of Antonio. “Olivia Allan is gonna go out with me?” Antonio asks one of Olivia’s handlers who tells him the plan. “Did my sister put you up to this?”
Of course, the couple must keep up appearances, so moviegoers will get to watch Antonio and Olivia go out in public together and even walk the red carpet, an environment that Antonio does not look very natural in. “¿Por qué pone cara de menso?” someone asks when they see him on TV looking like he’s about to have a panic attack.
We’ll see how far Antonio and Olivia can stretch the lie before it all ends up on Page Six.
The Valet, starring Eugenio Derbez, premieres on Hulu on May 20.
