One of reggaeton’s biggest stars is about to get the documentary treatment. The Boy From Medellín takes an intimate look at J Balvin that promises to explore his biggest triumph to date as well as the darkness that surrounds the singer.
Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Private War, Cartel Land, City Of Ghosts, The Trade), The Boy From Medellín centers around José Álvaro Osorio Balvín’s massive 2019 homecoming show at Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, Colombia, reaffirming his stature as one of the country’s biggest stars; in contrast, the concert coincided with massive demonstrations against police brutality—which resulted in the death of an 18-year old—and the current conservative government. The trailer promises a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Balvin as he struggles with his demons, his perceived obligations to speak out about social issues, and coming to terms with so much success while his dream of playing the biggest venue of his hometown becomes a reality.
While Balvin has been vocal about depression and other mental health issues he’s had to deal with, The Boy From Medellín promises to give us a more intimate perspective. It’s also interesting that it will tackle José’s conflict with taking a stand with social issues which has resulted in Balvin making less than ideal comments.
For the past year, J Balvin has been unstoppable. The reggaeton superstar has been releasing songs, videos, his own Happy Meal and Air Jordans, appearing on Hot Ones, etc. It was also revealed that he and girlfriend Valentina Ferrer are pregnant with a boy.
The Boy From Medellín premiered last September at Toronto Film Festival and will be available through Amazon Prime on May 7.
