Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) and Ismael Cruz Córdova (The Rings of Power) are featured in the first official trailer for the drama Finestkind, and it looks like both of their characters might be getting caught up in a shady world they don’t belong to.

The official synopsis for the film explains that the story is about “two brothers, Tom (Ben Foster) and Pete (Toby Wallace), who are reunited as adults over a fateful summer.” Finestkind is set in the world of commercial fishing where the brothers become desperate to save their father’s business and turn to a violent gang in Boston to get them out of trouble.

Ortega plays Mabel, Pete’s love interest, who gets caught in the middle of the bad dealings. Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones plays Ray, the father of the two men. Córdova plays Costa, one of the workers on the family’s fishing vessel. A month ago, Paramount released a first clip teasing the interactions and tension between these characters. And honestly, Ortega was giving it her everything.

In the first trailer, Tom tells Pete and Costa that he’s going to “show you what real fisherman can do.” The men are then stopped by the coast guard when they decide to fish in illegal waters. Their father’s boat is seized from them. “You’re going to have to do what I ask you to,” Mabel tells Pete and then introduces him and the crew to Boston gangsters and drugs.

We’ll see if Jenna Ortega and Ismael Cruz Córdova’s characters, and the family, can figure their way out of this tough situation when Finestkind premieres on Paramount+ on December 15, 2023.

This piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, Finestkind being covered here wouldn’t exist.
