Actress Melissa Barrera isn’t done being vocal about her support for Palestine. The Mexican actress, who was recently fired from the Scream franchise for her social media posts on the subject didn’t back down from her support, instead attending a pro-Palestine protest at Sundance Film Festival.
Barrera was in Park City for the premiere of her new film, Your Monster.
Protesters chanted “Free Palestine” and “Stop the genocide” as traffic came to a halt on Main Street in Park City. This occurred just as most people attending the festival, including celebrities, were trying to get to their screenings.
While there, Barrera also spoke to the Associated Press and about her Scream exit. She said, “Honestly, I feel like I finally am becoming who I’m supposed to be in life, and the last few months have been a big awakening of that. And I’m just so grateful for everything that’s happened.”
Pose star Indya Moore, who is of Haitian/Puerto Rican/Dominican ancestry, also attended the pro-Palestine protest and at one point spoke to the crowd about her support.
Barrera played Sam Carpenter in the last two Scream movies and was widely expected to reprise her role in the upcoming film before Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind the movies, decided to let her go in response to her pro-Palestine posts. At the time, Spyglass Media Group released a statement that said: “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Jenna Ortega, who played Barrera’s sister Tara Carpenter in the Scream franchise, also exited the movie.
Barrera posted a statement on Instagram after news of her firing, that read: “As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.”
“Silence is not an option for me,” Melissa Barrera ended the story with.
