Behind-the-scenes footage for the upcoming fantasy adventure Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves hit online Monday (December 5) and had fans excited about the potential fun the movie could bring to theaters next year. Fans, however, were less enthused about the movie’s first poster, which includes Michelle Rodriguez.

At this point, we’re going to assume the kind of cheesy graphic design pays homage to the original movie from 2000 and just the spirit of the game. Because that dragon…he’s a little off and we’ve definitely seen a poster just like this a couple of hundred times before.

Goofy movie poster aside, the BTS footage looks a thousand times more appealing, especially with Michelle Rodriguez (F9: The Fast Saga), Chris Pine (Wonder Woman 1984), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Dominion), and Sophia Lillis (It Chapter Two) leading the way.

In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is based on a tabletop role-playing game, Rodriguez plays a character known as Holga Kilgor, a barbarian who is a member of a band of thieves on a quest in search of a powerful golden helmet.

“It’s about finding your own hero within,” Rodriguez says in the BTS footage. “And each character has their own version of that journey.”

It turns out that part of Holga’s journey is to fight dragons and evil wizards to save the world. In one scene, Holga gets her hands on a giant battle ax that looks like it could do some major damage. “I don’t mind that,” Holga says as she pulls the ax out of a fiery, molten bath.

She also must battle a series of monsters in the movie. In one scene from the BTS footage, Holga is attacked by what looks like a mimic chest, full of teeth and a wicked tongue. “The Dungeons & Dragons world has amazing creatures,” Rodriguez said. “In this one, I think they outdid themselves.”

All in all, Rodriguez describes the film as “pretty badass.” We’ll see if Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves lives up to expectations when it hits theaters nationwide on March 31, 2023.
