For weeks Jackie Cruz, aka Flaca on Orange is the New Black, had been dropping hints of a Selena tribute. On Monday, she finally released her own version of “Como La Flor,” a stripped down, acoustic take on the classic. Accompanied by her real-life boyfriend, Fernando Garcia, Cruz tapped into her own life for video inspiration. She told Billboard that Garcia is an artist and mixologist at The Garret West, so that “what you see is basically our life.”
Cruz said that she picked this song because of it reminds her of a past relationship (which is kinda awk since it stars her current boyfriend…), but also because she’s been wanting to cover a song for Selena forever. “Today I am so thankful for all of the Love!” #Selena was such a beautiful person and I have been wanting to do this forever and couldn’t think of a better tribute,” she said on Instagram. “This was meant for her and the people that love her, so thanks again for all of the support!”
