A new trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish debuted online Wednesday (June 15) and the new animated adventure looks like a paw-some good time. The film is a prequel to 2011’s Puss in Boots, a spin-off to the Shrek franchise.

The film welcomes back Spanish actor Antonio Banderas as the voice of the titular tabby. This time, Puss learns that he has used up eight of his nine cat lives and must set out on a quest with his friends to find the mythical “Last Wish.”

In the new trailer, audiences get to see some of the ways Puss has died in the past – from exploding inside a cannon to falling off the top of a tower. Apparently, not all cats land on their feet. To keep from losing his last life, Puss decides the safest thing to do is retire and become a pet for a cat lady. While there, he meets a chihuahua named Perro (Harvey Guillén), who is passing himself off as a cat by wearing a handmade cat costume. He refers to himself as a therapy dog.

Puss may have said goodbye to his past, but it catches up to him when he is tracked down by the movie’s main villains, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura). Salma Hayek (Frida) returns to reprise her role as Kitty Softpaws, a savvy female feline, and Puss’s love interest.

“Whenever I team up with you, things go wrong,” Kitty says as things burst into fireballs behind them.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2022.
