The first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hit online Tuesday (December 13) and fans of the beloved web-slinging superhero are already counting down the days until the film hits theaters next summer.
Across the Spider-Verse is a follow-up to the 2018 Academy Award-winning computer-animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse where high school teen Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) discovers he has become the newest Spider-Man, and that there are portals in the universe that can open the doors to different versions of Spidey.
In the sequel, Miles’ friendly neighborhood Spider-Man reunites with Gwen Stacy and journeys across the Multiverse. There he meets a team of Spider-People tasked with protecting the Multiverse’s existence and sets off on a journey that cements the kind of hero he is and will be.
The voice cast, which is already stacked, includes Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), who plays the character Miguel O’Hara, an alternative version of Spider-Man from the future known as Spider-Man 2099.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Isaac called Spider-Man 2099 “the one Spider-Man that doesn’t have a sense of humor.” In this trailer, Isaac’s Spider-Man looks very serious. He pops up for a few quick appearances and asks our hero Miles, “Who do you think you are … really?”
The star of the trailer, besides Miles himself, is actress Luna Lauren Velez (Dexter) who reprises her role as Miles’ mother, Rio Morales. From the start, Rio speaks from the heart and tells her son that she knows he is no longer the little boy she raised.
“Wherever you go from here, you have to promise to take care of that little boy for me,” his mother says. “Make sure he never forgets where he came from. And he never doubts that he is loved. And he never lets anyone tell him that he doesn’t belong there.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse premieres at theaters nationwide on June 2, 2023.
