In celebration of “The Last of Us Day,” HBO has released both an intense official teaser for season 2 of the show and art for the second season of the drama series. The Last of Us Day or “Outbreak Day” is officially celebrated annually on September 26, the date on which the cordyceps virus catalyzed the events of The Last of Us video game.
The trailer opens with Catherine O’Hara and Pedro Pascal’s Joel. “I can’t heal something until you’re brave enough to say it out loud,” O’Hara’s character tells Pascal’s Joel, as we see moments of both Joel and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in the five years that have passed since the events of the first season. We also see Ellie interact with the new character Dina, played by Isabela Merced.
“Say the thing you’re afraid to say. Say it out loud, no matter what it is, no matter how bad,” the voiceover continues, as we see other characters, including Gabriel Lunna’s Tommy. “What did you do?” she finally asks, as the trailer finally focuses on Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby, the most highly anticipated character for season 2. She, alongside Joel and Ellie, were also featured in character posters for season 2.
The first season of The Last of Us was the most-watched debut season of a series ever for HBO. The second season is set to debut in 2025, though no exact date has yet been set.
The returning cast includes Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Previously announced cast includes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara also guest stars.
In Season 2, after five years of peace, “Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
