The Critics Choice Awards really, really loved West Side Story. The Steven Spielberg helmed musical tied with Belfast for 11 nominations, the most of any movie this year. Dune and The Power of the Dog trail with 10 nominations each.
Among the West Side Story nominations are Ariana DeBose and Rita Moreno, who are competing in the same category, Best Supporting Actress. Rachel Zegler, meanwhile, is up for Best Young Actor/Actress. The film is also nominated for Best Acting Ensemble, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, and Best Costume Design.
Encanto also saw some love come its way in the form of a Best Animated Film. And that was matched with a nomination for Best Song for “Dos Oruguitas.” Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score.
The Critics Choice Awards will be presented on January 9th, 2022, the same night as the Golden Globe Awards. The Globes have been marred in controversy for the lack of diversity in their voting body, with numerous steps taken to improve the issue for next year’s awards. Hopefully, the Critics Choice Awards don’t need all the corrective measures to deliver a diverse telecast.
