Who is White Tiger, the Latino Superhero in Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has kicked the doors down with the return of the Daredevil series in its new iteration, Daredevil: Born Again. While the series saw the return of past characters such as Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, there are also some newcomers joining the street-level world of Marvel heroes that, includes Puerto Rican actor Kamar de los Reyes as Hector Ayala, aka White Tiger.
White Tiger first appeared in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #19 (by Bill Mantlo and the late George Pérez) and was Marvel’s first Puerto Rican and Latino superhero. His powers stemmed from a magical Jade Tiger amulet that gave him heightened strength, speed and reflexes. Since then, the White Tiger has become a legacy with many others taking the name.

In the case of Daredevil: Born Again, Ayala is seen taking on some thugs in a subway in episode 2 before one of them is killed by an oncoming train, similar to what was shown at last year’s D23. Those thugs end up being cops and Ayala is arrested and labelled a “cop killer.” That’s where Matt Murdock comes in. He decides to represent Ayala. And throughout the investigation, his colleagues find out that Ayala is the White Tiger, a vigilante taking on crime in his neighborhood.
As of now, there’s still a lot that has yet to be confirmed for how much the character will be explored in Daredevil: Born Again. Unfortunately, de los Reyes passed away due to cancer after filming his scenes, making this his first and final performance in the MCU. That said, the odds are high that Daredevil won’t be the only iconic hero stealing the spotlight and someone will follow in White Tiger’s footsteps.
Daredevil: Born Again starts streaming on Disney+ on March 4th.
