With Blue Beetle behind him for now, Xolo Maridueña has his next movie lined up – and it with an Academy Award-winning legend.

According to Deadline, Maridueña will work alongside Oscar winner Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman) and Diego Boneta (Luis Miguel: The Series) on a thriller called Killing Castro. The film will follow the true story of Cuban revolution leader Fidel Castro who traveled to New York City in 1960 to address the United Nations General Assembly.

During his trip, he meets Malcolm X, who invites him to stay at the famed Hotel Theresa in Harlem after he is met with hostility at the hotel initially booked for him. While in NYC, a rookie undercover FBI agent is assigned to keep Castro from being assassinated by the CIA and the Italian Mafia.

Killing Castro will mark the directorial feature debut of Eif Rivera (Power Book III: Raising Kanan). Along with Maridueña, Pacino and Boneta, it will star KiKi Layne, Alexander Ludwig, Ron Livingston, Kendrick Sampson, Nicole Beharie, Logan Marshall and Titus Welliver. It is being produced by Brad Feinstein at Romulus Entertainment.

“I am honored to be part of telling such an important story that is a piece of history which was largely unknown,” Feinstein said. “Killing Castro perfectly encapsulates the type of stories we strive to tell at Romulus Entertainment, stories that do more than entertain audiences, but create thought-provoking diverse content that bring to light the complexities of real life.”

On Monday (December 4), Xolo Maridueña accepted the Rising Star Award at the Critics Choice Celebration Honoring Black, Latino & AAPI Achievements.
