Exit Elote Man, Enter Tamale Lady: Chicago Winter is Upon Us

Besides the loin freezing cold and frost bitten feet from still trying to rock your boat shoes during the transition from Chicago fall too Chicago winter, there is also one sure fire sign that the frozen dawn is upon us. This evident manifestation is the triumphant rise of the tamale lady. Although many tamale vendors can be found throughout the year, nothing says winter comfort better then buying tamales (I prefer rojos) and a champurado, and saying, “hey Jack Frost, f*ck you.”

Key spots to buy tamales legally (or illegally in some tamale cartel cases) are throughout Pilsen, anywhere on 26th street, and various spots on the westernmost portion of 47th street (anything past Ashland).

Im sure the tamale empire is vast and full of suspense and bloodshed, and some noble travelers will venture to the ends of earths for the perfect tamale (I wonder what’s good with Northside tamales?).

Luckily, however, I have a true hustler who sets up shop at 5am every morning near my house by Blue Island and Damen just to keep all the early birds full with Mexican comfort foods. God bless her tamale and champurado making soul. Elote man you were good to me this summer, but this winter is the season of the Tamale Lady.

P.S.
Don’t forget friends, many tamale ladies are done by 10-11am, so whether you are on the way to work or recovering from massive open bar hanogover, get up early to get your fix!

Anyone have suggestions for Northside tamale spots? or other key hot spots you care to share?
