Tamales kind of make our world go ’round here at Remezcla, and we love our local tamalera almost as much as our abuelita. There can never be too many of them, and lucky for the Pilsen ‘hood of Chicago, Dia De Los Tamales is about to open and bring some of the most unique stylings of tamales in a cozy local shop.

The brainchild of Cuban-American Jeni Wahl, her husband Sam Wahl and their friend Chef Keith Carlson, they first set the local foodie world afire at the Pilsen Community Market with their unique tamale flavor combinations and Jeni’s Cuban sandwiches. Soon after, the seed was planted to open their own spot to house Dia De Los Tamales and their catering company, Get Off The Couch Catering.

They received an overwhelming community response from their Kickstarter campaign earlier this year to support the opening, and almost immediately raised over $30,000. Dia De Los Tamales has made a vow to support local arts and community, like commissioning local artist Teresa Magaña of VIDA Y ALMA to paint and construct a giant sugar skull for the interior of their shop.

We love our traditional tamales just like everyone else, but they take a new spin on the classics with recipes such as the savory chicken pesto and  ropa vieja varieties, along with the sweet chocolate peanut butter for dessert.

The team is excited about their new storefront on the thriving 18th Street in Pilsen, and will be having a soft opening on April 19-21 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in advance of their Grand Opening on April 23!
