For the millionth sixth year in a row, the World Travel Awards have named Peru the World’s Leading Culinary Destination. The South American country beat out competitors Argentina, Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand, and the United States. This shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone in tune with the culinary world. For the last decade or so, the country has raised its gastronomic profile. The former Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Magali Silva credited the country’s investment in its cuisine as one reason for food’s increased renown.
Each year, multiple Peruvian restaurants end up on The Diners Club International’s 50 Best Restaurant List. This year, three restaurants – Central, Maido, and Astrid y Gastón – landed on the list. “Each exemplifies different aspects of Peru’s diverse culture and culinary creativity,” Bloomberg wrote in an article that named Lima the best food city.
Aside from the culinary destination award, Peru also won World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, South America’s Leading Green Destination, and South America’s Leading Tourist Board.
