On Tuesday (November 28), the highly-anticipated list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 was announced and included restaurants in 23 cities in a dozen countries.

The restaurant landing the No. 1 spot in this year’s list was Maido in Lima, Peru, reclaiming a status it last won in 2019. Head chef and owner Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura combines Peruvian and Japanese flavors. The list suggests ordering from the sushi bar and not missing out on the ceviche or the beef short ribs. In addition, Tsumura made the #14 spot on The Best Chef Yucatán 2023 list.

To have the full “Maido Experience” with wine pairing, dinner will set you back $1,498 per person. Earlier this year, Maido, which is Japanese for “welcome,” was named the No. 6 best restaurant on the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023.

Other Peruvian restaurants that made the list were Cosme (No. 50), Rafael (No. 46), La Mar (No. 42), Mil (No. 39), Osso (No. 33), Mérito (No. 13), Mayta (No. 10) and Kjolle (No. 7). Peru was the country with the second most restaurants on the list at nine.

The country with the most restaurants on the list was Mexico with 11. Its highest ranked restaurant was the Fauna at No. 5, which is located in Valle de Guadalupe. Argentina and Brazil were tied for the country with the third most restaurants at eight. The highest ranked restaurant in Argentina was Don Julio at No. 3, which is located in Buenos Aires. The highest ranked restaurant in Brazil was A Casa do Porco No. 4, which is located in São Paulo.

Other Latin American countries to make the list were Colombia, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Guatemala, Panama, Bolivia, Eduardo and Chile.
