“People in the art world joke that if you want to sell works at an art fair, just bring your biggest, shiniest objects. They’re attractive, and they’re selfie bait to boot, so they circulate well on social media.” That’s how Artnet’s recap of Art Basel highlights this year opened, and tbh they’re not completely wrong.
Art Basel 2015 officially kicked off in Miami on Thursday, and if your timelines are anything like mine (filled with big, shiny art objects) then you know the annual 305 festival is inescapable.
So, now that we have already given you a rundown of the artists to check out and the parties to attend, we have also rounded up some of the stand-out pieces we’ve encountered thus far, both online and IRL. This list is by no means exhaustive or definitive – with so much to see and do this week, there’s no way to catch it all. With that said, here are 15 pieces that caught our eye so far. Yes, many of them are flashy pop-art selfie-bait – sorry not sorry.
Check out them out if you’re in Miami. Or if you’re not, experience them through the magic of the Internet:
