Not gonna lie, not my favorite holiday of the year. We’re living in some dark times here in the US and all over the world. I can’t possibly gloss over the fact that what’s going on in #Ferguson isn’t overwhelming, scary, and to add insult to injury, timed with a holiday that essentially celebrates the genocide of Native American people. It’s all very… depressing. But for all my conscious New Yorkers out there, here are some events going down in the city this week that hopefully will lift your spirits higher. I hope I speak for the dance music communities of NYC in that we stand in solidarity with those in Ferguson, Ayotzinapa, Palestine, our barrios, and yours. “Turn up, don’t turn down, we doing this for Mike Brown!”
Basement Bhangra vs Que Bajo, Nov. 26th, 10:00 PM
Baby’s All Right will be hosting a pre-Thanksgiving mashup of sound and culture, that I’m sorry, but I cannot just reduce to the comparison of fried stuffed turnovers–Basement Bhangra vs Que Bajo. Basement Bhangra favorites DJ Rehka and DJ Petra face off against the likes of Que Bajo’s DJ Ushka and Geko Jones. More info here.
Tropical Goth Presents Raving George, Nov. 26th 10:00 PM
22 year old Belgium local Raving George is well known for her dark electric sounds. Bossa Nova’s on again off again night Tropical Goth will be hosting the dark tech DJ herself, who will be spinning alongside Brooklyn local DJ’s Stijn & Kiddo. Fade To Mind & Meanred Presents VIPER XL, Nov. 26th 10:00 PM
LA’s shapeshifting nightlife destination, VIPER XL, is making its formal NYC debut on Wednesday, November 26th. Headlining this special pre-Thanksgiving bash is head boss of Fade to Mind, Kingdom, along with MA of Nguzunguzu, Dubbel Dutch, and #KUNQ artists Rizzla, False Witness, & Battyjack. Plus, a special performance by NYC’s Jay Boogie. This is all going down at Brooklyn’s newest club spot, Good Room (formerly the once run down Polish club, Europa.) More info here.
88th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Nov. 27th, 9:00AM
Romeo Santos will be performing this year at the Thanksgiving Day Parade along with Nick Jonas and other celebrities. Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez will also be among those celebrating. Catch the parade at 77th Street and Central Park West, or if you’re not in the mood for celebrating, you can always protest the parade with those meeting at Union Sq. Protesting peacefully is an American tradition, let Romeo and NYC know how you really feel. #blacklivesmatter.
House Party Thanksgiving, Nov. 27th, 10:00 PM
NYC’s famous Webster Hall has 4 parties going off at once every Thursday night: Thanksgiving is no exception. Just Blaze holds it down in the Grand Ballroom on the 27th with DJ Soul and special guest O.T. Genasis. Electric Punanny keeps it vibes in the Balcony Lounge, Oscar & Va$htie keep the 90’s alive in the Marlin Room with 1992, and the underground is kept underground in the Bandits Basement with Dirty South Joe, DJ Fire & special guests.
