Edith González, 54, died on Thursday. In 2016, the Mexican novela star was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. A year later she was in remission, but it recently returned.

She is survived by her husband, Lorenzo Lazo, and her 14-year-old daughter, Constanza.

González began her career in 1970 when she was a child. She went on to act in more than 70 productions, interpreting strong and memorable women along the way. Some of her noteworthy roles include Leonela Villarreal in Rosa Salvaje, Mónica de Altamira in Corazón Salvaje, Esperanza Gamboa Martel in Nunca te olvidaré, and Doña Barbara in Doña Barbara.

For many, Edith was a constant presence in their childhoods. As the news hit social media, many – both those who knew her and others who watched her on screen – paid tribute to the iconic actress. Check out a few reactions below.
