So far, Hillary Clinton’s Latino outreach has been lukewarm at best.
On Monday, her team released a list titled “7 things Hillary Clinton has in common with your abuela.” Things like “she isn’t afraid to talk about the importance of el respeto” and “she reacts this way when people le faltan el respeto” felt more like Hispandering than a genuine attempt to connect with the Latino population. And as Julianne Escobedo Shepherd of Jezebel points out, there was no need for that many GIFs.
The entire list needed to be rethought because Clinton had a lot of privileges that were not necessarily afforded to our abuelitas. Of course, the Latinternet saw right through her, and the #notmiabuela/#notmyabuela hashtag was born.
Why couldn’t she just quit while she was ahead (aka playing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” at campaign stops)?
