With Día de Muertos right around the corner, you’ll likely see a rise in calavera producrts. And while some of it will be executed thoughtfully and connected to the culture that celebrates this holiday – which is often called Mexican Halloween, though it is decidedly not – others will feel appropriative. With that said, Mattel has launched a new Día de Muertos-themed Barbie – called Barbie Día de Muertos – and people have a lot of thoughts.

The doll is made up to look like La Catrina, one of the most emblematic figures of the holiday. She wears a long dress that includes bordados. Her hair is also styled with la flor de cempasúchil. The doll will be available in stores and online starting on September 12, according to EFE.

As the image of the dolls makes the round, people are sharing their thoughts. While some can’t wait to get the new doll, others say it once again takes from Indigenous culture. Check out some responses below.
