While Gulf corvina are getting busy, dolphins may be losing their hearing. Scientists have found that the species of Mexican fish has such loud orgies – which sound like “a really loud machine gun” – that other sea creatures are being affected, according to The Guardian.
Once a year, hundreds of thousands of Gulf corvina come together to smush and the male corvina emit the sound in hopes of attracting female fish. “The collective chorus of fish get together to spawn once a year,” said Timothy Rowell, who co-authored the Scientific Reports study. “The sound levels generated by chorusing is loud enough to cause at least temporary if not permanent hearing loss in marine mammals that were observed preying on the fish. These spawning events are among the loudest wildest event found on planet Earth.”
The sounds come in as high as 192 decibels, which could also cause permanent damage in humans, according to Inverse. But as the scientist’s state in their study, the loud noise is ” a sound worth saving” because overfishing has led to a decline in the corvina population.
