10 Latine Short Films To Watch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Institute revealed its lineup of 57 short films being presented at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Ranging from fiction, nonfiction, and animated titles, the curated list of short films showcase the vast power of cinematic storytelling. Through varied compositions of style, theme, and subject matter, these short films prove that an abbreviated runtime is not a hindrance, but an invitation to show up and show out.

The Sundance Film Festival will take place January 23 through February 2, 2025 in person in Park City and Salt Lake City Utah, with a selection of titles available for online viewing starting January 30 through February 2, 2025. Online viewers can purchase a viewing pass for $50 for access to the short films screening online. 

Hailing from around the world, including 28 countries and territories, we scoped out ten short films that feature Latine filmmakers, talent, and storylines. Get your popcorn ready!

Luz Diabla, Filmmakers: Paula Boffo, Gervasio Canda, Patricio Plaza

In this dark animated film, a queer raver seeks help after being involved in a car accident on his way to a party. He  stumbles upon a tiendita in the middle of the Argentine Pampas, and slowly spirals into visual delusions that have him question reality and the supernatural forces that come out at night.

Como Si La Tierra Se Las Hubiera Tragado, Filmmaker: Natalia León

Olivia is a young woman who returns to her hometown in Mexico after living abroad. Now back home,  she confronts the history of violence from her past and reconciles the painful memories that have afflicted her.

En Memoria, Filmmaker: Roberto Fatal & Ali Meyers-Ohki

Set in a dystopic future, a 14-year old girl’s dreams are up in the air as her mother struggles to finish her quinceñera dress. The mother is plagued with memories from fashion design school and the student loans that accompanied her studies.

Goodnight, Filmmaker: Isabel Pask

A hospice nurse reckons with both the comfort and fear of childhood when she hires a babysitter to care for her for a night. The film explores themes of freedom, play,  and the trajectory (and cycle) of life.

Miss You Perdularia, Filmmaker: Manu Zilveti

Set in Cuba, a group of highschool girls who call themselves “Las Perdularias” face the increased isolation of their island. The girls find a way to freeze time and play together in an invented space.

Pasta Negra, Filmmaker: Jorge Thielen Armand

Based on a story titled “Tijeras” by Karina Sainz Borgo, “Pasta Negra” features three Venezuelan women who cross the border of Venezuela through Colombia to purchase a package of pasta.

SUSANA, Filmmakers: Amandine Thomas & Gerardo Coello Escalante

A middle-aged American tourist finds herself adrift in Mexico City, where she stumbles upon a group of young Americans. What follows is an adventurous journey of self-discovery.

The Things We Keep, Filmmaker: Joanna Fernandez

When Kate receives word that her estranged mother is in need of caretaking, she sends her mother to a nursing home and takes on the duty of decluttering her hoarder home. What she finds among the walls uncovers her mother’s obsession and insidious illness.

The Long Valley, Filmmaker: Robert Machoian & Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck

Inspired by the filmmaker’s upbringing in the Salinas Valley, the film is a poetic reflection on the Salina Valley’s agricultural region, the hardworking people, and the breathtaking landscape that frames the film.

Platanero, Filmmaker: Juan Hernandez

Two Haitian brothers living in the Dominican Republic are struggling to get by. One night during a full moon, their desperation pushes them to steal from a banana plantation, where a looming beast is hiding in the shadows of the banana tree.
