There’s plenty of Spanish-language dialogue and music sprinkled throughout Pixar’s captivating and emotionally-rich Día de Muertos-inspired film Coco, but for those moviegoers who want their español in heavier doses – like the crema in your tres leches – there are plenty of theaters around the U.S. that’ll be screening a Latin American Spanish dubbed version of the heartwarming animation. Pixar will also release an English version with Spanish subtitles in some cinemas.
In the Spanish dub, some of the voices are replaced by other talented actors and entertainers. For example, legendary singer of Los Bukis Marco Antonio Solís lends his vocals to the role of Ernesto de la Cruz (played by Benjamin Bratt in the English version) and Luis Ángel Gómez steps into the recording booth for Anthony Gonzalez for the role of young, aspiring musician Miguel Rivera. Some of the actors like Gael García Bernal (as Héctor), Luis Valdez (as Tío Berto), and Alfonso Arau (as Papá Julio) give life to their characters in both the English and Spanish versions.
Other members of the Spanish-language cast include Héctor Bonilla, César Costa, Ana de la Reguera, Elena Poniatowska, Cecilia Suárez, Fernanda Tapia and Víctor Trujillo, to name a few.
Since one of the main themes of Coco is the importance of family, it’s great that Pixar is giving Latinos whose English may be limited a chance to experience the film and enjoy it with their loved ones.
