Now that we’re in the thick of coquito season, Puerto Ricans are proudly repping their beloved holiday drink (which is like an isleño version of eggnog, but better.)
Kicking things off in November was the Nuyorican staple, the Coquito Masters competition, which scours the tri-state area for the perfect concoction of coconut cream and milk, condensed milk, nutmeg, egg yolk, rum, cloves, and cinnamon. After more than a month of competing, Rosemary Colon took home the coquito crown.
But even for those who aren’t putting their coquitos out there to be judged, it’s still a pretty intense period that requires lots of preparation, such as buying (or emptying) bottles to gift the delish drink to loved ones.
For still others, it’s a time to make a little extra money.
Even CNN En Español has recognized that coquito is life.
