Everything You Need to Enjoy National Mojito Day

drinks-1

July 11th can mean so much to many people; maybe it’s your birthday, a special anniversary, or National Mojito Day. The go-to Cuban cocktail can be had the classic way or in flavors like coconut, passion fruit, strawberry, and more. While it’s usually made with rum, this list has recipes for you to try with different spirits as long as you’re 21 and older and drink responsibly.

According to Taste Cocktails, The exact origin of the mojito is often debated because while La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana is famous for claiming it as the cocktail’s birthplace, some stories trace it back to African slaves in Cuba who made a drink with sugar cane alcohol called aguardiente de caña. Another story dates back to the 1500s when Sir Francis Drake’s crew landed in Cuba suffering from scurvy and dysentery. Local remedies made with sugar cane alcohol, mint, lime, and sugar cane juice helped them recover, and a similar drink became known as “El Draque.” Over time, the recipe evolved, and with the rise of Bacardí in the 1800s and Ernest Hemingway’s love for the drink, the mojito grew into one of Cuba’s most famous cocktails. Also, the name “mojito” may have come from the word mojo, meaning a spell or Cuban lime-based seasoning, though there are other theories about its name.
