Buenos días, buenos días, buenos días, mi gente. We have good news and bad news, depending on who’s asking. J Balvin just won an award at FN’s Achievement Awards last night, December 3. Good news, no? Here’s the thing. The 34-year-old Colombian reggaetonero was honored with the award as their Style Influencer of the Year. For someone who’s known for their lime-dyed and leopard-printed hair, super Kawaii aesthetics and penchant for Spongebob, Balvin is an interesting pick. And even he realizes how surprising the decision was.
As is customary with Balvin, he inserted a proud “Pa la cultura,” moment in his Instagram caption about the award, but only before admitting that he dresses “como me da la gana,” and that, honestly, it’s his mother’s fault for always dressing him however she felt like dressing him. The artist was lighthearted about his honor, yet still thanked his team and the FNAA’s for recognizing him this year. He also took the opportunity to deck himself out in head-to-toe Dior for the event, wearing a suit with flowery needlework, a branded military cap, and the label’s bougie Saddle Bag — fanny pack version, no less.
But in an interview on the red carpet before the ceremony, J Balvin opened up more seriously about his own style influences. “When I was a kid, I was always curious to dress differently, but I’m still finding my style,” he told FN’s reporters. “It’s like music. The more I do it, the more I find myself. At the end of the day, fashion is expression; it’s art,” he added.
Well said, José. In the name of art, we’ve gathered our favorite (read: weirdest, funniest, iconic) looks by J Balvin over the past year. Do you think these ‘fits make J Balvin the Style Influencer of 2019? You be the judge!
