It’s officially awards season, and the latest ceremony on our radar is the highly anticipated Latin Grammys. Given the renewed visibility that Spanish-language pop music has had in the Anglo mainstream, one hopes this year’s nominees reflect the depth and variety of sounds making an impact.
The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences just announced the nominees for their 19th annual ceremony, and as per usual, familiar faces make up the majority of the selections this time around. There are a few exceptions, with more women nominees and a handful of emerging artists getting recognition. Overall, Colombian reggaeton superstar J Balvin leads the nominations with eight awards, and Spanish flamenco experimentalist Rosalía follows with five. Notably, Ozuna’s record-breaking Odisea album, which broke Billboard chart records set by Juan Gabriel and Selena, only received one nomination in the Best Urban Music Album category.
Scroll down for the nominees in our favorite categories, and head to LatinGrammy.com for the full list.
The awards will air on November 15, 2018 at the MGM Grand Garden Area on Univision in Las Vegas from 8-11 p.m. EST.
