It’s 2019, and the face of Latin streaming success is Bad Bunny — at least according to Spotify. The streaming giant’s long-awaited Wrapped 2019 list was released to the public on Monday, December 2, and it reveals some promising data surrounding urbano’s ongoing rise in the global music industry. Yes, global. Our boy Benito and J Balvin emerged on the overall ‘Global Top’ lists, and also led the way on Spotify’s ‘Latin Global’ and ‘Latin U.S.’ streaming lists.

Other Latinoamerican artists, like Camila Cabello, led heavily in overall global streams, while J Balvin and Bad Bunny topped the Latin global list at 34 million streams and 53 million streams, respectively. Data from Spotify’s Wrapped 2019 also names urbano bigshots like Ozuna, Anuel AA and Karol G among some of the top 10 Latin artists of the year.

As for leading Latin songs of the year, we finally see Cardi B (ft. Bad Bunny and J Balvin), getting some love for this summer’s hit, “I Like It,” in the United States, whereas Daddy Yankee’s “Con Calma” tops off the list for global listeners. Other notables include Sech and Darell’s “Otro Trago” and newcomer Lunay’s remix of “Soltera” with Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny.

It’s all good news for a genre that’s constantly on the rise; only now, we’re seeing added validation from streaming services. Nonetheless, Spotify’s data may suggest that other areas within Latin music are still being set apart in the streaming equation. With separate lists for Latin artists and songs, we only see a version of what Spotify qualifies as ‘Latin’ genres in their 2019 Wrapped — a distinction that seems to translate mostly into urbano and tropical music artists above every other genre that exists in Latin America and in the Spanish-language. A step forward for urbano’s biggest hits and artists may speak more to streaming’s commodification of the latest “Latin boom,” than to emerging Latin artist’s viability in the scene at large. But at least Conejo Malo is No. 1, right?
