MLB Spring Training is officially underway, which means the start of another exciting baseball season. However, 2025 is shaping up to be anything but ordinary as the offseason was filled with many exciting changes from players being traded to free agents signing with new teams and teams making massive moves to help them in their pursuits of winning the World Series.

As we gear up for the action ahead, we’re sharing five key storylines from Juan Soto to Ronald Acuña Jr., to watch as the MLB preseason kicks off!

Juan Soto’s Impact on the New York Mets

After signing a historic 15-year 765 million dollar contract, Juan Soto has a lot to prove. 2024 was one of Juan’s best offensive seasons as he hit a career high 41 home runs and drove in 109 runs, helping to lead the Yankees to the World Series, only to fall short against the Dodgers. His new team, the cross-town rival New York Mets were two wins away from a World Series appearance themselves. With the highest payroll in baseball and Soto declaring, “New York is now a Mets town,” expectations are high. Fans are eager to see if this blockbuster signing can end the Mets’ 38-year championship drought.

Rafael Devers and Red Sox Management Tension

The Boston Red Sox may have to deal with some internal issues this spring. The team signed former Houston Astros World Series champion 3rd baseman Alex Bregman to a 3-year $120 million contract this offseason, which has sparked tension with teammate Rafael Devers, who is also a 3rd baseman. When asked if he’d move to first base or DH to accommodate Bregman, Devers responded, “No, I play third base.” While his loyalty to the position can be seen as honorable, it’s important to note that Bregman is ranked a better defensive player. Team manager Alex Cora has dismissed past promises made to Devers about keeping third base, noting they came from a previous front office. With Devers under contract until 2034, Boston will need to address the situation when spring ends in order to ease the tension with their long term star.

Ronald Acuña’s Return from Injury

In 2024, Ronald Acuña’s season ended in a sadly familiar way. He tore his left ACL in May sidelining him for the rest of the year; just as a right ACL tear cut short his 2021 season. However Acuña has proved his resilience before. He returned from his first injury with a historic season hitting 40 home runs and stealing 70 bases earning him the National League MVP award in 2023. The question looms: Can Acuña make a second comeback and reclaim his status as one of baseball’s premier players? Or will the second injury cause an unfortunate decline?

Will This Be Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s Last Season in Toronto?

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has lived up to his Hall of Famer father’s legacy, racking up four All-Star selections, a Home Run Derby win, and multiple Silver Slugger awards. With all of this success however, he and his current team, the Toronto Blue Jays, have had difficulties reaching a contract extension before his rookie contract ends after the 2025 campaign. Guerrero and the Blue Jays could not reach a deal before the February 17th deadline he set. When asked if the Blue Jays were close to the number (salary) he was hoping for, Guerrero simply replied “no.” Now, with free agency on the horizon after the 2025 season, the Jays will have to compete with the rest of MLB to keep the star slugger.

Jasson Dominguez Finally Gets His Shot

Jasson Dominguez went from highly regarded teenage baseball prospect from Esperanza, Dominican Republic to New York Yankee in 2023, making his MLB debut. He burst onto the scene with a bang, homering off Justin Verlander in his first at-bat and hitting four home runs in just eight games before a torn UCL ended his season.

However, with Soto now a Met and Verdugo not getting resigned, Dominguez, returning this season, finally has his chance to shine. Playing alongside Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger, the Yankees are hopeful that Dominguez’s massive talent and successful mentors will help bring out the best in him and lead to a rookie of the year worthy season in order to help them return to the World Series for a second straight year.
