Mexico’s World Cup journey isn’t going to be easy, but it’s off to a promising start. On Sunday, El Tri made its 2018 World Cup debut against Germany, the reigning champion. But with goalie Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa resembling an impenetrable wall, he allowed Mexico to retain a 1-0 lead (thanks to an early goal from Hirving Lozano) and pull out that W. The goal and historic win prompted some memorable reactions, including a red-haired woman – identified as Karen Harfusch – getting caught saying “no names” on air. When Hirving scored, there were even reports that a minor artificial earthquake was detected in Mexico City, “possibly due to mass jumping.” This morning, riding that high, Mexicans were still celebrating.
In honor of El Tri’s first win, here’s a look at the pure, unadulterated joy Mexicans felt when its team beat Germany.
