This weekend, just before the world learned of the tragic loss of el Divo de Juárez, Mexican social feeds were taking in a steady stream of meme’s commemorating the latest Clásico Nacional – the semi-annual meeting of Mexican fútbol’s two perennial powerhouses, Club América and the Chivas of Guadalajara.

With Mexico City’s América heavily favored as the winner, the resounding 3-0 upset victory by Chivas was cause for national celebration and an outpouring of merciless cyberbullying against América’s famously boisterous fanbase. To add insult to injury, América was celebrating their 100th anniversary as a club, and the game was played on their home turf in CDMX – two facts that were not lost on the country’s savage army of human meme generators.

Indeed, it seems no matter which LigaMX team you support, América is the club that Mexicans love to hate. And their humiliating loss on Saturday opened the door to a social media feeding frenzy. As usual, the reactions ran the gamut from hilarious to tacky to gleefully homophobic, but with the exception of a few brave Americanistas who stepped up to defend their team, it seemed all of Mexico was united for a brief moment. Here’s a glance at some of this weekend’s greatest hits.
