Juan Gabriel’s legacy will always be celebrated. Today (June 22), Netflix announced their latest project—a Juan Gabriel documentary narrating the life of the Mexican icon. This upcoming documentary is in agreement with JuanGa’s estate and is set to feature never before seen archives.

“We are excited to collaborate with Netflix to release the story of my father’s personal life and musical career in this Documentary with Maria Jose Cuevas and with Mezcla,” Juan Gabriel’s son, Iván Aguilera, said in a press statement. “Bringing my father’s true story to the screen has been a project we have wanted to release for quite some time now. We are confident that with this team we have built, we can work closely together to bring his true story to life.”

Although there’s no release date yet, the official statement reveals that the documentary’s production will happen this year in the U.S. and Mexico. The statement also unveiled that the production will be directed by the Mexican director María José Cuevas, best known for her work on Beauties of the Night (2016). It will be produced by Laura Woldenberg and Ivonne Gutierrez of the Mexican independent production team Mezcla. The duo is known for their work in the documentary The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo and the documentary series 1994.

Fans are thrilled about the new documentary. A social media user wrote: “For me the combo Juan Gabriel + María José Cuevas (director of the endearing documentary Bellas de noche) is an absolute winner ✨.” Another social media user wrote: “How wonderful!!! His majesty Juan Gabriel deserves it 🛐👍🏻❤️.”

This upcoming untitled film will join the many other tributes that the flamboyant emblematic singer-songwriter has received to date. Before this, another biographical television series that commemorated his life story was Hasta que te conocí (2016), which was executively produced by the icon himself.

Juan Gabriel’s 45-year legacy includes recording over 47 albums, selling over 150 million albums, and composing over 1,800 songs.
