A Tropicália Tribute: Red Hot + Rio 2 brings Caetano Veloso, Beck, Os Mutantes, Seu Jorge, Devendra Banhardt, & más!

Tropicalia inspired Brazil’s countercultural movement of the late ’60s, and it still continues to shed light on some of the world’s need of attention mishaps. The Red Hot Organization and Entertainment One Music announce the release of the Red Hot + Rio 2 benefit compilation where this modern day tropicalia tribute will raise funds to bring awareness and prevention for HIV/AIDS (out on June 28, 2011).

Tropicalismo began a new kind of artistic interpretation that shook the country’s social and political order during a time of dictatorial oppression. This art movement wasn’t only a pedegogic tool for sociopolitical awareness, but it also amalgamated a world of poetry, literature, theater, visual art, and music. The music revolt was led by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto gil, who helped coin tropicalia’s gorgeous sound incorporating traditional bossa nova, African rhythms, and psychedelic rock.

Red Hot + Rio 2 features some exciting tracks such as Caetano’s own, “Tropicália” sung by Beck and Seu Jorge, “Soy Loco Por Ti, América” by Los Van Van and Carlinhos Brown. Other major and indie artists include freak folk father, Devendra Banhardt, gypsy punk rocker Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz, as well as John Legend, BeirutDavid Byrne and of course, Caetano Veloso himself plus much more.
