Through her team, Alicia Villarreal officially confirmed and spoke out about her situation. On Feb. 21, the Mexican singer’s team published an official statement about her domestic violence complaint against her husband, music producer and former Kumbia Kings member Cruz Martínez.
In the name of Villarreal, the press statement opened up by thanking the support and respect from the public, press, and community during this difficult situation. “We would like to inform that this past February 16, Alicia Villarreal filed a complaint for acts of violence, which was ratified on Wednesday, February 19, before the General Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Nuevo Leon,” it read.
It continued by saying that because the situation is going through a legal process, the singer can’t talk about it until the authorities allow her. It also thanked the public for understanding and respecting the process.
The official statement ends by saying: “Alicia Villarreal reaffirms her commitment to go to its ultimate consequences in the search for justice. Beyond her personal case, she wants this moment to be a precedent so that no woman has to live in a similar situation. Therefore, she calls on all those who experience violence to #VencerElSilencio [#ConquerTheSilence] and speak out with the certainty that they are not alone.”

Though the details remain unconfirmed, media outlets have been reporting occurrences of alleged domestic abuse after the viral footage of the singer signing for help started to circulate on the Internet. Mexican media outlets speculate that the domestic violence occurred on Feb. 15 after a heated argument with Martínez at their shared house in Monterrey. They allege that Villarreal went to the hospital for assistance because of the physical violence.
After filing the complaint, she talked to the press with the help of her legal representative. She said at the time: “I am grateful that you’ve waited for me for so many hours. I am also very grateful to the authorities who have given me time, and to all the people. I am really dealing with this, which has been difficult. We have come [here] to declare these facts, and the final decisions will be made by [the authorities],” before finishing her thought, she brought in her lawyer to talk.
“We are here to make the facts known, the circumstances that [Villarreal] narrates, everything was brought to the attention of the authorities, she was asked all the necessary questions, and now we expect the authorities to make their own decisions,” her legal representative said. “We are not judges, neither is she. The only thing she is doing is to inform the authorities about her current living situation, and about what happened. As of today, the authorities will make the decisions they have to make.”
