Babasónicos Video Trip: 1992-Present

Few bands give music videos the importance that Babasónicos has throughout their career. Their questioning of aesthetic standards promote a cult of the kitsch, a regurgitation of pop culture’s forgotten trash of yesterday. Both these elements are present in Babasónicos’ cryptic lyrics, as well as video motifs. To achieve this they started by directing their own videos. Lead singer Adrián Dárgelos would film them under the alias of Benito Scorza, a fictional eighth member of the Babasónicos tribe that was retired around the Miami era. This allowed other directors to step up during the new millennium.

From their extensive catalog we selected video clips to represent each of the nine official Babasónicos albums. A sort of then and now.

Currently you can catch the band headlining Heineken’s Inspire summer concert series in Chicago and LA, which boasts a diverse lineup of DJs as well (Mexican Institute of Sound, Nacotheque, and D’Marquesina). They’ve definitely come a long way since their early days of obscurity. See the group’s trajectory from 1992 to present day and maybe share some of your own favorite Babas videos.
