It’s been a fruitful week for Bad Bunny. Following his freshly received five Latin Grammy awards, the Puerto Rican superstar’s Un Verano Sin Ti was named TIME Magazine’s Best Album of 2022. On Nov. 20, the emblematic magazine revealed their top 10 albums of the year, describing their selections as albums that “pushed the boundaries of genre, theme, and sound,” – and Benito’s latest album received the No. 1 spot.
The magazine penned Benito’s fourth solo project as the album with the most “universal appeal” of the year. It further noted: “Driven by the musical styles of El Caribe, ranging from reggaeton and dembow to merengue and cumbia, and bolstered by elements of dance hall and techno, Benito firmly roots the album in the deeply personal, mining the universal experiences of love, loss, and the supreme pleasure of being alive, for an exceptional project that is genre-defying, intergenerational, and groundbreaking.”
Other albums on this year’s roster include Saya Gray’s 19 Masters on No. 2, Beyoncé’s Renaissance on No. 3, Father John Misty’s Chloe and the Next 20th Century on No. 4, and Pusha T’s It’s Almost Dry on No. 5. The second half highlights: Ibibio Sound Machine’s Electricity on No. 6, Angel Olsen’s Big Time on No. 7, Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers on No. 8, 070 Shake’s You Can’t Kill Me on No. 9, and Rosalía’s Motomami on No. 10.
This nod isn’t the first time TIME has Bad Bunny on its radar. Last year, the “Tití Me Preguntó” singer was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2021.
What’s next for Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti domination? He’s currently on the last half of his World’s Hottest Tour Latin American leg. He’s also nominated for three gringo Grammy awards, including Album Of The Year, which made history as the first-ever all-Spanish-language nomination in that category.
