Beyoncé Features Selena Quintanilla, Celia Cruz & Maluma on ‘B’Day 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition’
This is not a drill: Beyoncé’s known love and admiration for Selena Quintanilla has come full circle. On Sept. 3, the American superstar released the 20th-anniversary edition of her album, B’Day, featuring collaborations with Quintanilla, Celia Cruz, and Maluma.
“Two women from Texas. Two unmistakable and irreplaceable voices that broke down and continue to break down barriers,” Quintanilla’s estate posted online earlier today with an old interview video of Beyoncé speaking about Quintanilla’s influence. “Beyoncé revered Selena and remembers listening to her on the radio in Houston. She credits her for inspiring the recording of Irreemplazable, her Spanish EP released in 2007.”
On the album’s new deluxe edition, Beyoncé includes a mash-up of her iconic Spanish version of “IRREPLACEABLE” called “IRREMPLAZABLE” with Quintanilla’s “Como La Flor” called “IRREEMPLAZABLE (COMO LA FLOR) FEAT. SELENA.” The American pop icon sings “IRREMPLAZABLE “‘s original Spanish verse over “Como La Flor “‘s signature melody, made famous by Quintanilla in the 1990s. The mashup switches during the second minute to Quintanilla singing “Como La Flor”‘s lyrics, giving the song a full mix of two iconic pop songs that have shaped both the Latine and American pop communities over the last three decades. The song ends with Beyoncé’s “IRREMPLAZABLE” hook, breakdown, and chorus as the cherry on top.
But that isn’t all the Latine influence in this new edition. The Texan powerhouse also included a new bilingual (mostly Spanish-language) collaboration, “CUERPO (TUMBAO)” featuring Maluma, that includes a sample of Cruz’s classic hit “La Negra Tiene Tumbao.” “Beyoncé has long admired Cruz’s pride in her African culture; her refusal to bend in the wake of racism, colorism and the narrow definition of beauty,” the album’s press release states. This track was produced by Queen Bey, Edgar Barrera, and CASTA. Ali “Ali Ali” Alvarez co-produced it.
Other collaborations include her B’Day Deluxe Edition (2007) tracks like “AMOR GITANO” with Alejandro Fernández, “BEAUTIFUL LIAR” with Shakira, and the Spanish versions of her album’s hits.
