The first month of 2013 isn’t over yet, and artist Omar Rodríguez-López has thrown down the sonic gauntlet with “Torn Maps,” the first single from his latest project Bosnian Rainbows.

Bosnian Rainbows is a collaboration between ORL, Teri Gender Bender (of Le Butcherettes), Nicci Kasper, and Deantoni Parks. The quartet toured much of the world and previewed tracks from an upcoming album they’d already written and completed recording months before.

The song sounds nothing like what ORL has done up to this point, which makes sense since, as he told us last year in our interview, he’s not the sole songwriter in the group unlike his work in The Mars Volta and the ORL group.

Longtime fans who aren’t familiar with Bosnian Rainbows will probably be surprised by the more “alt-rock” sound of the track. For those familiar with the live version, the tempo is a bit slower in its recorded form.

There’s a keyboard line about halfway through that reminds me of Richard Wright’s (of Pink Floyd) work in the Wish You Were Here LP. Plus, there’s a guitar solo too!
